Lamias and Samodivas are female figures from Slavic folklore who appear in the forests of Bulgaria. Stories belonging to the oral culture of each region.

Samodivas are forest fairies, winged goddesses who live in the hollows of trees, in abandoned huts or dark caves, near rivers or wells, have healing powers and bless the crops.

Lamias are female dragons with the head of a dog and a large mouth, some have 3 to 9 heads, with sharp teeth and a long snake tail. They appear in the form of a storm or mist and destroy crops.

Lamias

Lamias

During a week’s residency at the Lomea Art Symposium in the Rusenski nature park on the border between Bulgaria and Romania, I wandered through the canyons, forests, rivers and caves in search of these mythological beings.

During the day I learned to draw their names in Cyrillic in the garage of the residence and at night I was able to summon them by light in the forest.

I took photographs in a number of possible locations of their habitats, images that I produced as postcards, which could be sent on condition that a story was told in reference to the being they referred to. In the caption there is an inscription in Cyrillic that states «if you take one of these postcards send it explaining the story of a Lamia or Samodiva».
