‘Coser con un martillo’ es la celebración del solsticio de verano y los rituales relacionados con el fuego. Las piezas de tela representan elementos simbólicos relacionados con esta estación, nuevos rituales (primeros balkoning en Mallorca) y a propaganda ideológica.

‘Sew with a Hammer’ is a celebration of the summer solstice and the fire rituals. The fabric pieces represent symbolic elements related to this season, new rituals (first balkoning in Mallorca) and ideological propaganda.

La celebración de Sant Joan es la trasferencia católica del rito pagano de celebración del inicio del verano. Ahora en Mallorca el rito se celebra con los primeros balkonings (acto de tirarse por un balcón de un hotel hacia la piscina, que ocasionalmente acaba en la muerte de un turista), y en la playa, esa noche, los servicios de recogida recolectaron 15.000 kilos de residuos solo en la zona de Palma.

The celebration of Sant Joan is the Catholic transfer of the pagan rite of celebrating the beginning of summer. Now in Mallorca the rite is celebrated with the first balkonings (the act of throwing oneself off a hotel balcony into the swimming pool, which occasionally ends in the death of a tourist), and on the beach that night, the collection services collected 15,000 kilos of waste in the Palma area.

Obelisco (o yo también quiero contar algo apoyando un palo en la pared)

En la avenida central de Banská Bystrica hay un obelisco en honor a los caídos de la revolución rusa que liberaron a la ciudad del nazismo. Es de mármol negro y tiene la insignia de la hoz y el martillo, y está coronado por una estrella de cinco puntas dorada. La construcción y asimilación de símbolos parte de un mecanismo cognitivo, propaganda y dispersión. Cuando Lenin llegó al poder hizo un concurso entre artistas para crear un símbolo reconocible de la revolución rusa, el ganador fue un martillo, una hoz y una espada, representaba las categorías sociales que representaban la revolución bolchevique, obreros industriales, campesinos y soldados, pero Lenin quiso quitar la espada por su connotación beligerante, el símbolo fue puesto sobre una estrella roja, inspirado por la novela utópica Estrella Roja, de Alexander Bugdánov. También se relaciona la estrella de 5 puntas con los 5 continentes, y desde una interpretación marxista alude a la idea de “¡proletarios del mundo, uniros!” (Manifiesto comunista, 1948). A menudo en las representaciones la hoz está empuñada por una mujer y el martillo por un hombre. 

El obelisco es del mismo mármol negro de las tumbas del cementerio, que se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad, justo detrás de la iglesia. Los vivos ponen flores de plástico a sus muertos, las tumbas de los muertos que no tienen vivos que los visiten tienen hierba, y flores vivas. 

El tronco quemado es de un bosque cercano, me dijeron que allí se reunían las mujeres ucranianas los domingos a hacer barbacoas, en general está prohibido hacer barbacoas en el bosque, no por peligro de fuego, aquí llueve demasiado para que se quemen las plantas secas, antes hay otra verde que se hace suyo el territorio.

Obelisk (or I want to tell something by leaning a stick against the wall)

On the central avenue of Banská Bystrica there is an obelisk in honour of the fallen of the Russian revolution who liberated the city from Nazism. It is made of black marble and bears the insignia of the hammer and sickle, topped by a golden five-pointed star. The construction and assimilation of symbols is part of a cognitive mechanism, propaganda and dispersion. When Lenin came to power he held a competition among artists to create a recognisable symbol of the Russian revolution, the winner was a hammer, sickle and sword, representing the social categories that represented the Bolshevik revolution, industrial workers, peasants and soldiers, but Lenin wanted to remove the sword because of its belligerent connotation, the symbol was placed on a red star, inspired by the utopian novel Red Star, by Alexander Bugdanov. The five-pointed star is also related to the five continents, and from a Marxist interpretation it alludes to the idea of «proletarians of the world, unite! Often in the representations the sickle is wielded by a woman and the hammer by a man.

The obelisk is made of the same black marble as the tombs in the cemetery, which is located in the center of town, just behind the church. The living put plastic flowers on their dead, the graves of the dead who have no living to visit them have grass, and live flowers.
The burnt trunk is from a nearby forest, I was told that Ukrainian women used to gather there on Sundays to barbecue, in general it is forbidden to barbecue in the forest, not because of fire danger, it rains too much here for dry plants to burn, before there is another green one that makes the territory its own.
